India Recalls Champarn

Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched the year-long
Centenary celebrations of   Satyagrah in New Delhi and
appealed for revival of the spirit of  fight for justice started by
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi at Motihari in April 1917.Similar function
was held at Patna where the Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar
addressed a gathering of freedom fighters.President Pranab Mukherjee
will attend the celebrations at Ashok International  convention centre
at Patna.
Mohandas Karmachand Gandhi became Mahatma Gandhi during the Champaran
satyagrah which he launched against the Britishers's exploitation of
the Indigo planters of Champaran. He had held preliminary discussions
with the Congress leaders at Calcutta(Now Kolk  kata) an reached Patna
on April 10.He stayed at the residence of Mazarahul Haq,one of his
lawyer friends in Sikandar Manzil on Fraser Road/He left for Motihari
in a third class coach from Pahlezaghat .He had boarded a steamer at
Mahendrughat . At Muzaffarpur,he stayed at Langat Singh College
premises, where other senior Congress leaders joined him.Rajendra
Prasad who  later became the first president of India also gave legal
assistance to Mohandas in his fight against the Motihari based British
officers.

He was guided to Motihari by Ram Nawami Prasad,Gaya Prasad and
Rajkumar  Shukla.Mohandas Gandhi was agitated over brutal
exploitation of the indigo planters by the owners of 22 Indigo
factories in Motihari. When farmers joined his agitation, the Britishers
further harassed them and the farms and house of Shukla were auctioned
by the Britishers.Mohandas Gandhi was served with an externment order
by SDM of Motihari during a brief trial.Mohandas was then asked to
furnish a bond for his release, which he refused.Ultimately the
magistrate released him.
Mohandas continued with his agitation from his camp at Bhitharwa
ashram and succeeded in providing relief to the indigo planters
through his non-violent ,peaceful satyagrah.Satyagrah got
international recognition for the first time and Mohandas was declared
Mahatma by the indigo farmers.

Indigo(NEEL) was used by the textile plant owners .Indigo colours were
sold in packs and in tablet forms till quite recently.
